Londres : la Tate Modern s’agrandit

http://www.batiactu.com/special/image.php3?type=Grande_image&doc=/data/25072006/25072006-163156.html

This site presents the proposals for a new extension to Tate Modern. This is an opportunity for you to see how the project is developing and how Tate is responding to local people's views.

The site explains why Tate Modern needs to expand and the benefits of the proposed new activities and facilities. The designs will be submitted for planning approval in autumn 2006, with a decision expected early in 2007.

There will be an opportunity to talk directly to the architects and members of the project team at one of the public meetings which will be held at Tate Modern in the coming months.

A New Museum for the 21st Century

The new development of Tate Modern will create the world's first museum designed to show the full breadth of contemporary art in the 21st century.

The new project will:

Create the world's leading centre for contemporary art, which will be of benefit to both artists and our public and help Tate to develop one of the finest collections of contemporary art in the world.

Create a new landmark building for London, which will help it to maintain its position as the leading cultural and creative capital of the world.

Act as a catalyst for the further regeneration of Southwark. The new building will facilitate the greater integration of Tate with its local community and urban landscape, bringing maximum benefit to the local area.

Place education, life-long learning and the development of creative skills at the heart of what we do, enabling Tate to reach out to different audiences.

Contribute substantial economic benefits to London as a whole and to Southwark in particular.

The Success of Tate Modern

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/success_weatherproject.jpg
Olafur Eliasson The Weather Project Unilever Series, Tate Modern 2003
Over 25 million people have visited Tate Modern since it opened in May 2000. In only six years, it has transformed a previously underdeveloped area of London and has helped give the city a new image as a leading centre of contemporary culture. Tate Modern has become a new landmark for London and its programme and architecture have won international acclaim.

Tate Modern is the most popular museum of modern art in the world.

Attendance has been double original expectations.

60% of visitors to Tate Modern are under 35 years of age.

Tate Modern is the third most popular free visitor attraction in London.

Almost 2 million people have taken part in Tate Modern's education programmes since opening.

In 2001, Tate Modern was awarded the first Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building.

In March 2005, hundreds of Time Out readers nominated Tate Modern as their favourite London building.

Tate Modern contributes between £75 and £140 million in economic benefits to London annually.

The arrival of Tate Modern has generated between 2,000 and 4,000 new jobs, about half of which are located in the Southwark area.

Why is there a need for change?

There is an urgent need for more space. Tate Modern was
designed for 1.8 million visitors. In its opening year it got 5 million
and it has now settled down to a steady 4 million a year. There is
serious overcrowding in many parts of the building, particularly at
weekends. Visitors are asking for improved facilities..

There is a need for more space to show Tate's collection:

To enable works to be brought out of storage and shown on a more permanent basis.

To accommodate the expanding collection which is developing into new areas geographically, including China, Latin America and India.

To provide new spaces for art forms new to Tate - including photography, film, video and performance.

To provide space for new acquisitions to encourage gifts to the Collection.

To provide more varied spaces for large-scale works and installations.

We want to develop a wider range of education facilities where families, young people, schools and the local community have time and space to explore, talk about and discover the museum.

The world has changed rapidly over the last ten years, particularly in how we use technology. Tate Modern needs to respond to new developments.

Visiting Tate Modern can sometimes be a daunting and tiring experience with so much to see and do. We want to develop more places to eat, read, study, picnic, shop and just relax, to improve our visitors' experience.

What will the new development provide?

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/newdevelopment.jpg

View of the Turbine Hall North-South route © Tate
A spectacular new building by Herzog & de Meuron will be developed adjoining the south side of Tate Modern, which will increase its overall size by 60%, creating 23,400m of new space.

This will provide:

New kinds of galleries to house works from Tate's growing collection.

Spaces to show new areas of contemporary visual culture.

New galleries for major exhibitions.

A new performance venue.

A sequence of superb new education spaces unmatched anywhere in the world.

Spaces designed specifically by young people for young people.

Areas specially designed for families.

Additional facilities for Tate Members.

More restaurants and cafés.

Two new public squares for London on the south and west of the building.
The project will also include a number of improvements to the existing Tate Modern building.

The new building will also play a key role in the development of London's new cultural quarter on the South Bank, which comprises over 20 cultural organisations between the London Eye and the Design Museum.

Who are the designers of the new development?

Herzog & de Meuron Philharmonic Hall, Hamburg (completion 2009)
http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/whodesigns_hamburg.jpg

Herzog & de Meuron were the architects who converted the Bankside Powerstation in 2000. They were selected from an international shortlist to further develop the building in January 2005.

Herzog & de Meuron was founded in Basel by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron and the practice now has offices in London, Munich, Barcelona, San Francisco and Beijing. It has received international acclaim and awards for its innovative work, including the Pritzker Prize in 2001 and the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2003.

The practice's award-winning projects include the Laban Dance Centre in London (2003), the Schaulager for the Laurenz Foundation in Basel (2003) and Prada's flagship store in Aoyama Tokyo (2003). Recently completed projects include Allianz Arena, the new Soccer Stadium for Munich (completed in May 2005, opening game FIFA World Cup 2006), the Expansion of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (2005) and the new de Young Museum in San Francisco (2005). Other forthcoming works include the National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing (projected completion 2007) and The Philharmonic Hall, Hamburg, which will be completed in 2009.

A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity

Existing occupancy of EDF Energy substation

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/efd_engergy2_large.jpg
What many people don't realise is that a large part of the existing Tate Modern building is currently disused and needs to be brought back into use. The Switch House, located to the south of the Turbine Hall, still houses an electricity substation that continues to serve a large area of the City and south London.

Why is the development happening now?

An exciting opportunity has arisen - EDF Energy who own and operate the electricity substation located in Tate Modern's Switch House, need to modernise the station's equipment. This provides an opportunity to move the plant into a smaller area of the building thus freeing up space for Tate Modern to expand to the south. A new building can therefore be developed adjoining the existing building on the footprint of the power station's former oil tanks. The London Development Agency has agreed funding of £7 million to meet the total projected costs of the relocation.

The Tate Modern Master Plan

Bankside Urban Park
http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/bankside.jpg

The master plan for the Tate Modern site has been prepared by the Herzog & de Meuron led design team to establish the full potential of the site to contribute to cultural development, the community and public spaces on Bankside. The master plan covers the whole site and proposes a series of new public spaces and routes on all sides of the former power station, within which two new buildings will be set.

The first building, which will be located on the site of the disused underground oil tanks, is for Tate's expanded galleries and will be the subject of a planning application later this year. The potential for a second new building is identified in front of the east end of the Switch House. This would permit another cultural organisation to move to Bankside. A further planning application would be made for this in the future.

The master plan comprises these key elements:

A new 23,400m2 building for Tate Modern - this will be the subject of a planning application later this summer.

Potential for a further 7,000m2 of space for another cultural organisation, to complement Tate Modern and to strengthen the Cultural Quarter. There would be another planning application at a later date for this building.

New pedestrian routes - in this part of Bankside pedestrian routes are limited and not well defined. The new development will create a new north-south route or 'street' through the building, linking the City to Elephant and Castle. This will be open for at least 12 hours a day.

Improved public spaces - a series of high quality new public spaces will be created all around Tate Modern to increase the opportunities for visitors to sit and relax, meet with friends and enjoy the Bankside environment.

A new landscape strategy is being developed to unify and integrate the new public realm surrounding Tate Modern and distinguish the different types of spaces and their functions. Over 1350 new trees will be planted and new seating provided.

The new development of Tate Modern will be much more than just a building; it will be a dynamic new part of London - a new creative campus stretching southwards.

A new landscaped park surrounding the building, the Bankside Urban Park, is a major project initiated by Tate and Southwark Council and being led by the Business Improvement District, Better Bankside. This will connect new landscaped areas around the gallery to open spaces across Southwark extending towards the Elephant and Castle.

Section Drawings of levels and facilities

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/1.jpg
LEVEL 1  Ticketing, orientation and the cloakroom are located here. We are developing two performance spaces in the disused oil tanks - one is a flexible rectangular box to show a wide range of performance art, installations, broadcasts, concerts and new media. The 2nd will draw upon the unique qualities of the oil tanks and doubles up as a foyer area. The art space has been created out of the foundations of the existing switch house.

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/2.jpg
LEVEL 2  Visitors will approach the newly created south entrance through Tate Square, past the Tate Shop and Tate Café. There will be a meeting room, bookable by community groups, and a new art space for themed shows from the Tate collection.

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/3.jpg
LEVEL 3  A temporary exhibition space will accommodate large exhibitions or can be subdivided to take smaller ones. There is also an adjacent shop, staff offices and staff meeting place.

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/4.jpg
LEVEL 4  will accommodate four new galleries for the Tate collection. Flexible floor heights will adapt to suit works of differing scales. The areas between the boxes will be used to show contextual work and interpretative material. There are also offices and a terrace overlooking the Turbine Hall.

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/5.jpg
LEVEL 5  A bridge connects the original and new buildings. Tate Exchange provides spaces for groups to exchange skills, expertise and ideas. Young Tate will be based here and there will be studio spaces to display work originating from the various community programmes. These galleries can also be used to try out new ways of curating exhibitions.

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/transformingtm/images/6.jpg
LEVEL 6  Tower Gallery will be used for cutting edge contemporary art, with a particular focus on innovation.

Merci Stickyesman!!!

Les plans commencent à être affiné! ça me semble très intéressant!

Tate Modern extension by Herzog & de Meuron

"Here are new images of architects Herzog & de Meuron’s extension to the Tate Modern art gallery in London, which was recently granted planning permission.

More details plus images of the architects earlier design for the extension in our earlier story.

The extension will add a new wing and also convert underground tanks (below), previously used to store oil for the former power station, into new galleries."
