Jean Nouvel

Doha High Rise Office Building

Development in Qatar has taken an original turn in putting significant emphasis on culture with the declared goal to make Qatar at large and Doha city in particular the cultural pole of the Gulf region.
The National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage under the chairmanship of Sheik Saud bin Mohammed bin Ali al-Thani is planning a large scheme featuring cultural buildings (museums, libraries) where some of the finest and most pre-eminent architects and designers are invited to participate. This scheme is redefining the skyline of the Doha bay through landscaping the Corniche and designing a series of remarkable buildings, intended as landmarks, along the shore. Located between the new city centre and the Corniche on the north side of the bay, the high rise building by Ateliers Jean Nouvel will take place in the new skyline.
A daring and innovative architect, Jean Nouvel has long questioned the traditional central-cored, four-curtain-walled orthogonal scheme for high rise buildings. Since his project of the Tour Sans Fins he has explored steadily the concept of a circular plan tower with its structure on the periphery which enables more free, better lit (and better light controlled) floor spaces as well as providing wider views towards the landscape.
The concept actually being implemented in the construction of the Agbar tower in Barcelona finds in Doha a new development.
The Doha high rise tower is cylindrical and measures about 45m in diameter. It is capped by a dome and topped by a lightning conductor at 231,50m. The structure is of steel and concrete on a lozenge grid bending upon the virtual surface of the cylinder. The façade is composed of a double cladding. The exterior which evokes the geometric complexity of the oriental moucharabieh and acts as main solar protection is composed of four “butterfly” aluminium elements of different scales. Its overall pattern is different according to orientations and needs for different protection: 25% towards north, 40% towards south, 60% on east and west. The inside layer is a slightly reflective glass skin to complement solar protection. Last a system of roller-blinds can be used if needed.
Each floor is offered panoramic views towards the Gulf on the east, the port on the south, the city on the west, the coast and the desert on the north.
The tower is accessed through a planted garden sloping gently towards the large lobby under a glass canopy surrounding the building and suggesting that the tower is deeply rooted in earth. Vegetation and glass canopy overlap so as to blur the limits between nature and man made environment. A huge atrium rises up to level 27 at 112m high. Tall and slim, glittering in its silvery laced silhouette against the skyline, the tower is bound to become a fine landmark on the Doha Corniche.
