New Yorkers deliberate fate of Coney Island
The public review process for a massive $2.5 billion revitalization plan of New York City’s famed Coney Island began Tuesday. The plan calls for the rezoning of a 19-block area to create a 27-acre indoor and outdoor amusement park and entertainment district that will transform the storied summertime attraction, which has shrunk and deteriorated over the years, into a bustling year round destination. Mayor unveils plan for Coney Island rezoning
The city wants to create an expanded 27-acre amusement district as well as residential towers up to 27 stories high.

The Bloomberg Administration will officially unveil its long-awaited plans to rezone Coney Island on Tuesday.
The Department of City Planning wants to rezone 60 acres in the Brooklyn neighborhood to spur reinvestment. The centerpiece of the plan is a 27-acre amusement district that will expand the types of rides and attractions a developer can bring to the area. The current zoning for the amusement district is too antiquated, city officials say, and does not allow for contemporary attractions like virtual reality rides, water parks, movie theaters or even sit-down restaurants the city hopes to attract. Thus far, between the freaks, the hunger strikes, the attacks via the media between city officials and a Brooklyn developer, the protestors brought in by the busloads to show up to an environmental scoping hearing (many of whom didn’t know where they were going), and the opposition by a civic group, the Bloomberg administration’s attempt to breathe new life into Coney Island has been, to use a cliché, a rollercoaster ride.
