A l'origine il s'agit d'une demande du roi de France qui avait besoin d'un pont capable de supporter le passage de ses troupes entre la Gascogne et le reste du Royaume.

Sa construction * a duré de 1541 à 1632, longtemps ajournée pour des raisons de coûts, de guerres, de crues...
