Pour ne pas favoriser une des trois éthnies principales la décision est prise en 1976 de transférer la capitale depuis Lagos, dominée par les Yorubas, dans une région neutre. En traçant des lignes "X" sur la carte de Nigeria, l'ancien chef d'état, Muritala Mohammed, tombe sur une zone peu peuplée et propice au développement. Cependant les travaux de construction ne débutent qu'en 1981. Le parlement est transféré en 1987 mais la ville n'est devenue officiellement capitale qu'en 1991. Le nom est emprunté d'un village, proche de la ville de Suleija (village depuis assimilé à Suleija) située à une cinquantaine de kilomètres de la cité actuelle.

Construction starts on Nigerian art and nature complex
Featuring the Nigeria Cultural Centre, Millennium Tower and Municipal Building
Work has begun on the Nigeria National Complex in Abuja. Dedicated to the art and nature of Nigeria, the complex is being developed on an area over 170,000sqm. It will feature the Nigeria Cultural Centre and the National Square where the Millennium Tower and Municipal Building will be located.
